Endodontic Retreatment Q&A

What is endodontic retreatment?

Endodontic retreatment is a dental procedure performed when a tooth that’s previously undergone root canal treatment fails to heal properly or develops new problems. The goal of this procedure is to remove any persistent infection, clean and disinfect the root canal system, and then reseal the tooth to restore its health and function.

This can occur if your initial treatment didn’t eliminate all of the infection, the tooth is reinfected due to a new cavity, or you have complications such as a fractured tooth or a loose crown.

When is endodontic retreatment necessary?

Endodontic retreatment is necessary when your previously treated tooth becomes symptomatic again. You may need retreatment if you experience:

  • Persistent pain
  • Swelling
  • Sensitivity to temperature
  • Formation of an abscess

Even if you don’t have symptoms, a routine dental checkup might reveal that a previously treated tooth isn’t healing correctly or is showing signs of infection. In such cases, retreatment can save the tooth from extraction and restore it to full health.

What can I expect during an endodontic retreatment?

During endodontic retreatment, your endodontist first numbs the area around the affected tooth to ensure comfort. Next, they reopen the tooth to gain access to the root canals.

Your dentist removes any existing filling materials, such as a crown or post, to thoroughly clean the root canals. They then carefully clean and disinfect the canals, removing any infected tissue or debris.

Once they thoroughly clean the canals, they reshape and fill the tooth with new sealing material. The last step involves sealing the tooth with a temporary or permanent filling. In addition, they may place a crown to protect and restore your tooth’s function.

What happens after my endodontic retreatment?

After endodontic retreatment, you may experience discomfort or sensitivity as your tooth heals. Your dentist may recommend over-the-counter pain relievers.

Attend your follow-up appointments so they can monitor your healing process and ensure your tooth recovers as expected. If your tooth is sealed with a temporary filling, you’ll need to return for a permanent filling or crown.

With proper care, including good oral hygiene and regular dental visits, a successfully retreated tooth can last a lifetime.
